Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Install Grab Bars?

Installing grab bars in your shower is a crucial step toward maintaining bathroom safety and personal independence as you age. As balance and mobility naturally decline, everyday activities like showering can become riskier. Wet, slippery surfaces are a common cause of falls, a leading source of injury among seniors in Canada.

Bathroom safety grab bars provide a stable and secure handhold when standing, sitting, or stepping in and out of the shower. Installing grab bars now is a proactive way to reduce fall risks before they occur. These simple bathroom safety accessories offer peace of mind and support when you need it most, allowing you to bathe independently and with confidence.

How Much Does it Cost to Install Grab Bars?

Do You Install Grab Bars in Apartments and Condominiums?

Yes, we can install grab bars in condos and apartments throughout the Greater Toronto Area. These buildings often have different wall construction, such as tile over drywall, tile over plaster and lath, metal studs, or limited backing, which can affect how grab bars are mounted.

In many cases, we can install grab bars that provide reliable support for balance and stability during everyday use. However, depending on the wall structure, they may not always be suitable for full body-weight support.

We assess each installation individually and recommend the most appropriate installation method based on the wall conditions and how the grab bar will be used.

Because condominium and rental buildings may have specific rules regarding alterations to walls, we require written authorization from the resident or tenant, as well as approval from the property manager or condominium corporation, prior to installation. This helps ensure the process is smooth and compliant with building requirements.

Do Grab Bars Need To Be Installed Into Wall Studs?

In public buildings, grab bars must be mounted into wall framing or blocking for universal use.

For residential home installations, our first priority is placing bathroom safety bars where they best serve the primary user. If a wall stud is located in that spot, we’ll use it. If not, we will install using specialized, ADA-approved wall anchors designed to securely fasten grab bars to various wall types without compromising safety. These industry-approved anchors are specifically designed for long-term durability, even when a stud isn’t available.

Other methods of fastening grab bars to walls will be determined subject to wall construction and on-site wall analysis. Click Here to learn more.

What Height Should Grab Bars Be Installed?

Grab bars are typically installed between 33 and 36 inches from the floor, depending on how they will be used. For example, horizontal bars in a shower are often placed around this range, while vertical bars near the entrance may be positioned differently for easier support when stepping in and out.

In commercial and public buildings, grab bar placement must follow the Ontario Building Code. In residential settings, there is more flexibility, and placement should be based on the user’s height, mobility, and comfort.

In our experience, the best results come from positioning grab bars based on how they will actually be used day-to-day, rather than relying on a fixed measurement. For more specific needs, an occupational therapist can also provide personalized guidance.

How Long Does Grab Bar Installation Take?

The installation of two grab bars takes about one hour. We clean up after our installation and your grab bars can be used immediately.

Is There a Risk of Cracking a Tile During Installation?

The risk of cracking a tile during grab bar installation is very low, especially when proper tools and techniques are used. In some cases, cracks can occur if the tile was not securely bonded or if there are hollow areas behind it, which can make it more vulnerable during drilling.

At 2For1GrabBar, we use high-quality, purpose-built drill bits designed for ceramic, porcelain, and stone to minimize vibration and reduce the chance of damage.

In our experience, tile damage is uncommon, and the added safety and stability provided by a securely installed grab bar far outweigh the minimal risk.

Can I get a Tax Credit for Installing Grab Bars?

Yes! In Canada, you may be eligible for tax credits or financial assistance programs when you invest in home safety for seniors:

These programs can help offset the cost of accessible bathroom improvements, including the installation of grab bars and other safety accessories.
